J1 Teacher Program

The J-1 Teacher Program is a non-immigrant cultural exchange that gives teachers a chance to teach in the United States. Qualified foreign nationals are welcome to teach in both accredited public and private schools in the US, at primary and secondary levels.

It is conducted to create a learning space for Americans and individuals from other nations to share ideas and culture. In this way, teachers from all over the world are able to showcase their excellence and outstanding teaching skills while immersing the class in a rich cultural experience, an equally beneficial initiative.

The students will grow compassionate and prepared for the world while teachers can offer their professional service while introducing their culture and ideas. A teacher may work in a U.S. school for up to 3 years with the option of an additional 1 or 2 years.

  • Meet the requirements to teach in elementary or secondary schools in their nation of citizenship or previous place of lawful residency;
  • Be employed as a teacher in their country of origin or country of legal residence at the time of application, or, if not employed as a teacher, meeting all other eligibility requirements and having
    • (a) recently (within 12 months of application) completed an advanced degree and
    • (b) two years of full-time teaching experience within the previous eight years, as well as
  • Possess a degree in education or the academic discipline in which they wish to teach that is equal to a U.S. bachelor's degree;
  • Have worked as a teacher or in a career related for a minimum of two years (24 months);
  • Meet the standards of the U.S. state in which they will teach;
  • Posses a solid reputation and morals;
  • Seeking to enter the country with the intention of working full-time as a teacher of record at an accredited primary (including pre-kindergarten) or secondary educational facility there (pre-kindergarten teachers are only permitted to work full-time at the pre-kindergarten level at accredited host schools);
  • Able to speak and write English well enough.

Educational and cultural enrichment: Exchange teachers participate in cross-cultural activities in schools and communities, develop their professional abilities, and then return to their home school after the exchange to share their experiences and deepen their understanding of the United States and its educational system.

Repeat participation: Given that teachers who continue to fulfill the eligibility conditions and have resided outside the United States for two years are eligible to repeat the program.
